Despite all the accidental triggering–seriously, even Google admits that its assistant is a little too eager–the Google Assistant still seems to be the preferred voice assistant on Android devices. The helpful assistant is available everywhere, including your smartphone, Chromebooks, Google’s best smart home devices, and television. It’s hard not to think that Google Assistant’s preferred status is due to its quality or simply because it’s the default choice on Android devices. However, you cannot deny that it’s an incredibly flexible assistant with an impressive variety of functions.

    What is Google Assistant?

Google Assistant is Google’s virtual assistance system. It helps you accomplish tasks faster. It is possible to use automation and voice commands instead of tapping the screen several times.

Based on the device and the platform, The Assistant app can launch on the device and platform and send messages, make phone calls, stream a certain song, monitor the weather, operate smart devices and timers, access basic information and set alarms, and many more things.

It’s not only available only on smartphones. It’s also available on smartwatches, smart speakers, headphones, and other items. More about this later.

    How to Enable Google Assistant

Google Assistant comes turned on by default on nearly all Android devices. Hold your Home key to determine if it’s on for your device. If it’s on, it will begin talking to you. If it’s not, you’ll be asked to turn it off via email in the screen’s lower right-hand corner.

If the prompt does not appear, then you can enable it within your Google Assistant settings like this:

    • Open the Google app.
    • Click on the profile picture and then select Settings.
    • Go to Google Assistant > General.
    • You can enable turn on the Google Assistant toggle.

When you turn it on After turning it on, you’ll notice that your Google Assistant is now ready to answer any questions you may have and follow your commands and provide you with relevant results for your searches. Just press the Home button for a long time and then speak. If you’re using the gesture interface instead of buttons, simply swipe your finger diagonally across either of the bottom corners of your screen toward the center.

How to Make Google Assistant Recognize Your Voice

Alongside pressing the home button for a long time or making gestures, you can activate Google Assistant using your voice through the Voice Match feature, in which the words that trigger the assistant, such as “Hey Google” or “Ok Google,” will awake the assistant.

With voice match, Google Assistant also provides personalized results instead of generic ones. However, before trying this out, you must train Google Assistant to detect your voice.

To accomplish this, follow these steps:

    • Long press the Home button to start Google Assistant.
    • Say “Open Assistant settings.”
    • Tap Hey Google & Voice Match.
    • Turn on your Hello Google switch.
    • Follow the instructions on the screen, and then tap to finish.

    Make a Phone Call

You can contact someone using the application by asking Google Assistant to call a specific person on your phone. When you first do this, you must give access to the contacts. If your contact is more than one number, you’ll be asked to select one. The assistant will then display the number. Next, tap on the phone to call.

If you’d like to make video calls, you can tell the app to make an appointment using the preferred method like Zoom or Google MeetiPhone or iPad users can also make FaceTime calls to anyone with an Apple device.

    Send a Text

The assistant can be instructed to text someone from your contacts list and then writes the message through the assistant. Once you’re done, the app asks whether you’d like to send or alter the message. The assistant then launches your default messaging app to allow you to text the message.

    Create an Email

To send an email to someone else to someone, ask Google Assistant to “Send an email to [name of contact].” Then, write your email, and the application will ask whether you’d like to forward it or amend it. Then, simply click “Send it,” and your email will be sent to you via Gmail.

    Set a Reminder

You can schedule the reminder using Google Assistant by saying something like, “Remind me to call my dentist at 3 p.m.” If you don’t set a specific time, the assistant will ask you to provide the date and time. Then, the app will show you an alert and prompts you whether you would like to save the reminder. Answer “Yes,” and the reminder will be displayed on your mobile at the set time.

    Google Assistant vs. Alexa

Google’s closest competitor in the smart home and assistant area can be found in Amazon Alexa and the retailer’s Echo speakers.

On the surface, Alexa and Google Assistant seem quite similar. Both are focused on voice commands. There’s plenty of overlap between the various actions (or capabilities or skills, as Amazon refers to them), which can be performed to provide meteorological forecasts to stream music.

The latest generation of speakers is beginning to diverge in design. Amazon has selected a spherical shape for its latest Echo models and the Echo Dot versions. In contrast, Google’s Nest Audio is slim and tall, while its smaller Nest Mini is flat and round as the hockey puck.

As with Google, Amazon positions Alexa as an alternative to other speakers. Indeed, Alexa already has a huge hardware ecosystem, which includes TVs, speakers, automobile infotainment systems, and even smart bathtubs and mirrors. Google is trying to catch up in the size of its portfolio and support partners.

There are significant differences between how both ecosystems function and what capabilities they’re trying to provide. The most notable difference is that Google Assistant can run on various tablets, phones, laptops, laptops, and other smart home devices, whereas Alexa is primarily a part of the smart home space; however, there are some exceptions. Phones are an important feature for Google and other options you can’t get in Alexa. There is a way to install Alexa on your phone from the Play Store in the event that you’re keen to use it.

The best way to look at these distinctions is to realize that Alexa is primarily an intelligent home assistant that has connections to other applications. Google Assistant is more like an assistant, assisting you every step of the way, whether trying to get your work done or converting from kilometers to miles.|

If you’re concerned about the price, Amazon typically wins in this area. Although MSRPs may be identical, Amazon devices are often sold at a discounted price. For instance, it’s not uncommon to see the Amazon Echo Dot for $20-$35, and the Google Nest Mini rarely goes for sale, and if they do, the device is rarely priced at a significant discount.
