What Is a CSV File?

However, CSV files are used primarily to import and export crucial information, like information about orders and customers in and out of your database.
A more concrete illustration is an online retailer that purchases customers’ data from an online social media site. The website will transmit the customer’s information to your database in CSV format, which is easy and fast to transfer the information. If properly formatted, CSV files are simple to convert into different file types. In addition, CSV files aren’t object-oriented or hierarchical, which means they share a common structure. This further aspect makes them simple to export, import, and convert.
How to create a CSV File
If you wish to transfer your information in CSV format, you can do this by opening a CSV file, such as in Excel, then opening your Excel Excel File menu and choosing the Save option. In the Save as window, select CSV (Comma separated) (*.csv)from the Save as type list.
Be aware that CSV files cannot contain multiple sheets. When you create the CSV file, it will include information from the currently active sheet.

If your computer already has Microsoft Excel installed, just double-click on a CSV file and open it within Excel. When you double-click the file, you will get an alert asking you which program you wish to open the file with. Select Microsoft Excel.

Why CSV files can’t be used to backup for your eCommerce store
Many retailers are under the assumption that having CSV export is similar to creating an archive of their online store. It’s easy to believe that, considering that even Shopify recommends using CSV exports to create a CSV export to back up your store. However, this is a bad idea and here’s why:
1. You can’t export the entire store
It is possible to transfer and export the following information from your store into CSV files: inventory, customers, products, customers orders, inventory (export only), and discounted prices (export just).
You cannot export your pages, such as blog posts, menus, or menus (which comprise a large portion of your website).
Every aspect of the store’s operation in the platform’s backend is linked. Therefore, when an import fails or a code change occurs, it’s difficult to know how the modification will affect your store. This is why you shouldn’t rely on a few “backups” to help you when you encounter a problem.
2. You have to update your CSV
Everything associated with CSV files must be manually completed, including making changes to them.
If you use CSV files for backup, you’ll need to ensure that you update these files regularly. In certain instances, an export that is a week old could be outdated and cannot be used for recovery in the event of a malfunction. Who wants to add another tedious task to their ever-growing list of tasks?
3. CSV files can’t distinguish custom categories
If you have a Shopify CSV file that has been exported to your store, then the CSV file is not helpful in restoring the items if they were to disappear.
CSV files are extremely helpful when you’re trying to make large-scale edits, such as price changes or a change in the content of certain files. But, they generally don’t contain details about collections of products or make distinctions between different products or the collections they are part of.
4. CSV files aren’t able to have images transferred across
Furthermore, once a particular product is removed from your online store, images of the item are deleted too.
Images for products are not able to be converted into CSV format. As a consequence, should you lose all your products, you’ll need to manually put all of the images onto your products, which can take a few hours or even days of effort.
